Landscape and Garden Design

Open Question: What has caused the holes, in the ground of my backgarden?

I have discovered that i have holes more than one, in my back garden. I use to have Moles and a wasp nest in my back garden, solved that but now i have this. Does anyone know what could have caused this and how to cease the problem without the use of pest control as they can be pricey. I have a photo but don't know how to attach it to my question.

Open Question: how to dry hot peppers from my garden?

Open Question: ortho-max bug spray / how long after application can you start to pick string beans?

I sprayed my veg garden about 4 days ago w/ "Ortho Max Bug Killer " and notice different amounts of days for different veg's to wait for it to wear off. ""but forgot time frame for string beans"" and mine are at peak flavor right now, texture &taste. want to start picking

Open Question: Ideas for screening please?

I would like advice on a new plant to help with screening. The garden is tiny - about 40 feet long by 19 feet wide. There are high fences and I have planted climbing roses and a bamboo on both sides, which works really well. I would now like to plant something in the centre of the garden, to make it less open and provide screening. There is already a big tree stump there which has been turned into a table to sit at, and so ideally, the plant would be about 6-10 feet high but quite narrow - say about 2-3 feet, if possible! It would be planted to the side of the tree stump. This part of the garden is in full sun. Any ideas welcome. I wondered about another clump forming bamboo or unusual grasses? (But have a cat who eats ornamental grass) Alternatively, a flowering shrub? It doesn't have to be evergreen, although that would be nice. Something quite delicate would be nice - so not a laurel plant or similar. Thank you!

Open Question: Why do African Americans continue to vote for Failed Democratic Policies?

Least Educated, Most Impoverished.... Democrats have been running our inner-cities for the past 30 to 40 years, and blacks are still complaining about the same problems. More than $7 trillion dollars have been spent on poverty programs since Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty with little, if any, impact on poverty. Diabolically, every election cycle, Democrats blame Republicans for the deplorable conditions in the inner-cities, then incite blacks to cast a protest vote against Republicans. http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=16500 As a point of probable interest, eight of the ten poorest congressional districts are Democratic strongholds: NY-16 (39.4%, CPVI Democrat +41); TX-15 (31.3%, CPVI Democrat +3); MI-13 (31%, CPVI Democrat +31); CA-20 (29.3%, CPVI Democrat +5); PA-1 (29.2%, CPVI Democrat +35); MS-2 (28.9%, CPVI Democrat +12); KY-5 (27.4%, CPVI Republican +16); TX-28 (27.1%, CPVI Democrat +0); TX-27 (26.9%. CPVI Republican +2); and AZ-4 (26.8%, CPVI Democrat +13). Plainly put, residents in congressional districts that supported Democrats John Kerry (2004) and Barack Obama (2008) are significantly more likely than those in congressional districts that supported George W. Bush (2004) and John McCain (2008) to have high poverty rates. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2729127/poverty_rates_and_democratic_congressional.html?cat=47 LEAST EDUCATED Congressional Districts 1. Texas-29 (South Houston-Baytown, 53%, CPVI Democrat +8); 2. California-34 (East Los Angeles, 54.4%, CPVI Democrat +22); 3. California-20 (Fresno-Lamont, 55.2%, CPVI Democrat +5); 4. California-47 (Garden Grove-Santa Ana, 55.8%, CPVI Democrat +4); 5. New York-16 (Bronx, 58.5%, CPVI Democrat +41); 6. California-31 (Northeast Los Angeles-Hollywood, 59.2%, CPVI Democrat +29); 7. Illinois-4 (Chicago-Cicero, 61.7%, CPVI Democrat +32); 8. Arizona-4 (Phoenix-Guadalupe, 63.6%, CPVI Democrat +13); 9. Texas-15 (Corpus Christie-McAllen, 64.7%, CPVI Democrat +3); 10. Texas-28 (Laredo-San Antonio, 65%, CPVI Democrat +0). Hey Black America... It's NOT WORKING !

Open Question: Temporary solutions for a fallen down fence?

Hi, my back garden fence is in 4 sections held together my rock posts, I woke up this morning to find one of the sections had fallen down, it seems to be because of rot and every of the pieces of wood have detached themselves from each other. The main problem is that my garden backs onto a church car park and as I have a kid this makes it dangerous and decreases my homes security greatly. I was wondering if anyone had any temprary solutions to block the gap off before I can receive a new fence put in, I was thinking of maybe getting some rope and tying it between the posts but I dont think this would give me the temporary security I need. The gap is about 2m and because the posts are rock trying to nail across the gap is not an option Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Elektra

Open Question: Preparing my garden for turf?

I have dug out the top 2 or 3 inches of soil, grass and weeds, i've tried to remove a huge ivy type bush/tree but some roots still remain they span the entire garden space. My plan was to put 2 or 3 inches of top soil and then turf over it. Will the roots that i'm unable to remove affect the turf through the top soil? Should i use a "weed barrier" beneath the top soil? Would spraying the soil/weeds with "Roundup" before putting top soil down be a good idea? Thanks in advance.

Open Question: Would shooting a BB gun at a thief be illegal in California?

Recently, I've had people break into my car for my GPS system, and my system with my subwoofers, amp, etc.. One incident occurred when my car was parked across the road (across my home) and at approx. 4a.m I heard my car alarm (the one that sounds only when the car gets hit) *beep beep beep* and I ran outside, knowing something fishy. I looked out my window and I look a latino running towards a car. If I had a BB gun in ORANGE COUNTY // GARDEN GROVE and were to shoot it at him while he were running, would that be considered illegal? Would he be able to sue me? Please do not tell me that a BB gun is weak, I am loaded with a single barrel Ithaca Pump Shotty, and I have an AK47. Would shooting a BB gun at him because he broke into my window and "almost" jacked my GPS until he saw my head appear at the window and he boned out be illegal? When can and when can't I shoot it at the thief? Thank you so much.

Open Question: small, low-maintenance pets?

i have been looking into buying a new pet lately. i have a decently sized fish tank, which i used to home a couple of goldfish in the past. i'm not sure what nice of pet i would like to receive, however. i don't want fish, so those are out of the question. i'd like something that would be fine in or out of the water. i'm extremely interested in garden snails and leopard slugs, but i'm not sure how to go about ordering some. i cannot find them in my area (south carolina). what are some interesting pets that would be suitable? nothing that is prone to biting, though. and i'd rather not spend a fortune.

Open Question: What exactly are the requirements of being a Property Manager aside from "experience"?

I just would like to know how one becomes a property manager. In most of the apartment buildings and communities I've been to, the property manager is pretty young. Some say that real estate is a good background to have. But in every the job descriptions I've seen it says "dealing with maintenance people, serving notices when necessary, showing the property to potential tenants, collecting rent, light gardening, light emergency maintenance...." I was wondering why anyone would need experience to do this. Isn't a resume with customer service positions and moderate manual labor (housepainting/powerwashing)? How does one even gain experience then except by being hired? I just think it would be a good job because I would be paid and have discounted rent. I've been unemployed for 10 months. I moved to San Diego from New York 11 months ago, and I cannot believe how difficult it is to receive a job here. I have literally put at least 200 applications (20 per month or so) and received one callback. Now I do not know what to do because I have no transportation and I live in a shi*ty apartment. Property management would suit my needs but what should I say to receive an interview?

Open Question: Winter formal theme help! Does formal really need to have a theme?

I know we're in the middle of summer but soon my school will be selecting our themes for prom and winter formal. I am stuck. I don't want to have a typical winter formal theme like "Night below the Stars", "Vegas", "Night in the Garden", or "Paris". I found this picture at http://lovepromiseandring.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/wedding-centerpieces.jpg and I adore it as a middle piece. I adore the cleanliness and Elegance it offers. Is there a theme that can capture every of this? I'm also in need of a title. Too be more creative I was thinking about doing a one word title, for example "Elegance". Do you think that will be too corney for a bunch of high schoolers? Let me know what you think. every opinions welcome! Thank you!

Open Question: I want to can salsa but don't want to have to cook it, can I just keep it in the fridge?

Ok, so for the last 3-4 years, I've been making fresh salsa out of the vegetables I grow in the garden. I usually make about 8oz (...ish) at a time as the tomatoes ripen, this year, I'm planning on making it every at once. I don't cook my salsa ever, I use fresh tomatoes, peppers, garlic, misc. spices and vinegar, and keep it in the fridge; if I can it and just keep it in the fridge, is that ok? (I've looked online and the sites I've found have said that it needs to be cooked and you can't substitute anything and it has to be done their way...that's not how I cook, so if there's a way I can use my possess salsa, I would rather do that) ...how long would it keep in the freezer? when I've left it in the fridge, it lasts about 2 months....I know it would be longer, but by how much?

Open Question: Is this rug too girly?

I recently moved in with my boyfriend (yay!) and we're starting to decorate the apartment. Well, I am - he doesn't care too much as long as things aren't "too girly." We're both young (25 and 26) and we're going for a casual vibe in our apartment. Sadly, we live in San Francisco and like most SF places, we've got wood floors that have to be covered. The landlord painted a tiny(er) room a pale/sage green, and I found a great carpet to go in it: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Earth-Tone-blossom-Patterned-carpet-57-x-79/4757237/product.html?rcmndsrc=2 What do you think? Is it too girly? Will he receive over it? Other suggestions? We're trying to decorate without breaking the bank so it's tough! Thanks!

Open Question: What do you think of this poem?

I do not consider myself, by any great lengths, a poet, but I do dabble in poetry. I recently edited this piece and would like some honest opinions on it. Advice on how to improve would be much appreciated as well. Thanks. :] Cryptomnesia I sit here in the sound garden, dividing joy between the muses. I've been counting crows again; And I will burn every last one with this arcade flame. This steady diet of iron and wine gave birth to icy war kids with bright eyes and radio heads. After a blur of ten years, eleven fingers, and one-hundred-and-eighty-two blinks, I have faith no more in these rock age queens who sit as tall as lions in their silver chairs; not with gin blossoms like that sprouting up along the neutral milk hotel. I suppose the dead are grateful for the flowers, but there is no doubt my thirteen senses scramble for acceptance. Stones will roll along with these talking heads. More power to the cats who survive three dog nights and every those indigo girls who don't fall for cheap tricks. There is a flame inside these wolves from the sea, but there is no air supply left for their aqualung nirvana. These roots will always be rusted.

Open Question: I am looking for a book of children's poems possibly published in the late 1980's or early 1990's.?

I cannot remember the title or the author. I count them very carefully especially around the moon because I do not wish to go to bed a star too soon!"

Open Question: My neighbor's dog always goes into our yard..help!?

I recently moved into a new home, I don't live there yet because the home needs to be renovated, but I do go over there every once is a while. Unfortunately, my backyard shares a tiny fence with another neighbor that has a pretty big dog. I'm not sure what breed, but I think it's close to a pit bull -- it seems really violent. When my pal was at my home helping me with gardening, the dog was barking and growling at her, she likes dogs, but sometimes they scared her; so she got scared of it. The neighbor was on the porch, but turned back, so he didn't look what his dog was doing, but he heard my pal scream. every he said was, "she's harmless" The other day when I was mowing the lawn...i found dog waste, i'm pretty sure it was their dog since none of my other neighbors possess big dogs. A few days ago, when I went into my backyard, their DOG was in MY backyard, and when I saw it, it ran at me. I don't know why, but I got scared and ran inside. the neighbor, again, simply said, "she doesn't bark" the neighbors don't seem to realize that I don't want the dog there. What should I do? Besides talk to the neighbors, is there anything I can do? THANK YOU :D

Open Question: How is this ethically different from having an abortion?

VILLERS-AU-TERTRE, France -- A French lady who admitted suffocating eight of her newborns and concealing their corpses in the garden and garage of her home has been charged with manslaughter, a prosecutor said Thursday. The relax of the article: http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-france-dead-newborns,0,7980797.story I realize that French abortion laws are pretty strict. But I'm comparing this to US abortion law. How is what this lady did any different morally than what happens in abortion clinics in the US every day? Jim Em, you didn't answer my question at every. So are you saying that suffocating newborns is ok? What if the lady decides a couple years later that she didn't want the child? Can she kill him or her? Abortion is legal in the US well past the embryo stage. Penny, how are these totally different issues?

Open Question: My dog is miserable in this heat! What can I do?

I have a tiny Jack Russell Terrier mix, and when it gets too hot in the home, outside, at the park, etc. he has a difficult time coping with the heat. When it's too warm for him, he is exhausted, lies down, and looks really uncomfortable. Sometimes he looks at me like he's saying "help!". He seems like he "don't like" panting, when he does. When I felt his body/tummy it was very warm like a heating pad! This is not in the hot hot days, ie Arizona weather, I live in MI, and it's only about 85 out. The other dogs seems to be hot, panting but "OK". He has done this in 78 degree weather one time during the evening! To try to help, I shaved his hair every off, and sometimes I spray him with the garden hose to chilly him down, but I know that's only temporary. I also tell him to drink water, and I hold him in front of the AC for about 20 mins to chilly his body off as well. But, when there is no AC, he's out of luck. Is there something I can do to keep him from "suffering" in the heat?

Open Question: in the beginning it was mention that the tree of good and evil and the tree of life was placed in the middle..?

the garden of Eden, and after Adam and Eve disobeyed,God placed at the east of the garden of Eden"Cherubims", and a flaming sword which turned every way of the tree of life. ok..? if Eden was a real paradise place(heaven on earth) and was guarded by the Cherubims after the first humans sin..? do you think that the garden of Eden was still there before the flood.? or did it burn out, right after.? if it was real, do you know the exact place..? why was it not mention in any prophets mouth about the garden of Eden.? why didn't Noah or his son's use that as a lesson to their kids's? disobedience is the beginning of sin right? and it should be thought by Noah and his kids's and the kids's after. the best tool to be thought to their possess if they were Godly people and use Adam and Eve as the first great lessons to remember. where they receive the garden of Eden story I can't figure out, but to say it's every made up to fit it well since they too don't know how they came and why they're here.. Curiosity of humans begins since the beginning of human race and will end till we're every gone entirely. we make no difference from the rock age human beings personality with us today.... only we are more advance in our world then their possess. so I say that they just had to arrive up with something that sounds logical in their view.... to end their unrest mind and to relax the case once and for every.. GOD DID IT is the answer to every their curious mind, and very challenging questions. and it still works in our time zone world. it settles every case of the unanswered religion/science challenging questions. does it not...? I can honestly say that what science and/or religion can't answer, I will settled my case with the God did it-dead end thing. well, :) it's the only way to balance your mind, right? fair and square..!! :))) @BR: I did my research brother and it's not clear enough, to some they say the garden of Eden and the four river head start's in turkey and some say Kuwait and still some especially Christianity religion/faith they claim that the Garden of Eden and the four river heads start at the land of Judea... they doubt it to be possible for one head to make four split of rivers that would flow that far off to the other lands mentions in the bible( the four split rivers that goes to those lands do not fit to make it possible for the lands-geographic reasons, but only find it possible for two long ones and one very short one can). even if it was there in the land of Judea. so... who's right on this..? what the bible say's, or what the intelligent's of today finds after a deligent research on the sites..?

Open Question: Help/ideas needed in constructing a large wired frame?

I am making 6 big bowling pins shaped like glass coke bottles (they're about 4.5 feet tall). Paper mâché was a bust so I decided to go with a wired frame method. I used a wired cone shaped tomato "stand" used for gardening as the base frame. I tweaked the 4 horizontal circles to match circumfrance(sp?) at those points & I bent the vertical wires to match the curves of the bottle. So far it looks great, but I need smaller gaps between the wires (if I were to cover the pin in whatever I end up using - tarp/mesh/whatever- it would have a very boxy look to it). I started elevating various wired rings to match the cirumf at that point, but this is taking forever and it's not an easy task. Any alternatives or suggestions to make this potential "boxy pin problem" easier? Also, how can I replicate the shape of a wire easily? I've tried a few methods like bending with pliers, but it never comes out good enough and it sometimes messes up the original shape. Note: the pins are recycle-themed so my supplies are limited but not restricted to recycled materials.

Open Question: O'Ryan: As a former Democrat, can you show me where I "cheated" the system, or didn't want to work at all?

And expected others to pick up the slack for me? Teenager growing up: Spent 4 years in a private school and participated in the Job Corp for each of those four years doing farm work, landscaping, gardening, and construction. Age 18: First job as a dishwasher--walking three miles to work each and every day--in the rain or heavy Vermont snow. Age 22-28: Worked a number of minimum-wage jobs, paid my bills, rent, and was self-sufficient. Spent the last 6 years on disability due to health and psychological problems. Even then, I had a two-bedroom apartment, married, paid the bills, and was self-sufficient. Downsized to a one-bedroom, but nothing's changed. Today, I went downtown to take care of some errands (three doctor appointments for my INR, vascular scan and my eye pressure tests) and complete my eligibility review for my GA-X benefits and my wife's. (Passed on both fronts.) Despite my physical health issues being a problem and my emotional issues, I still think of myself as being self-sufficient. Even on disability (GA-X or SSI), I have never cheated the system--because I don't know *how*. Even when I worked my jobs, I never cheated the system then, or when I filed my income taxes. (I worry the most at that point: What if I put down the wrong number or enter an incorrect figure--or even fill out a part wrong? I don't want the IRS to think I'm cheating!) But where along these lines would you say that I "cheated" the system or couldn't tug my possess weight? Or expected others to do the work for me? You claim that Democrats are "notorious" cheaters and dead-beats--including myself. I'd like to know why you believe this?

Open Question: Vegetarian to Veganism question?

I have been vegetarian for a while now and I'm wondering about the next step into veganism. But I wouldn't be giving up eggs reason being is because I have 4 pet chickens who live in our garden and run free and lay eggs. They live a glad life and are well looked after as pets. I was wondering If I stuck to veganism but ate our chickens/free range eggs is that still vegan? Thanks for any help :) ahh. I honestly don't look how less cruelty would arrive out of cutting eggs out of my diet (In my case) so I look no point in this case. Besides if we don't eat them then they will or they will draw foxes which isn't good either :S I'll just stay with ovo-vegetarian (I think thats what its called) :) Thanks for every your answers by the way :)

Open Question: do you rather have Jesus in your hear or Jesus in your garden?
